For a undefeated upcoming star in the super fly weight, boxing is more than just a sport. It’s a way to escape the unforgiving hood.
“Boxing wasn’t just about punches” Steven Navarro says. “It was about finding a way out.”
Growing up in Inglewood, CA, Steven Navarro, now 21, steered clear of gangbanging and drug underworld by aiming at the ring. Today Steven is the current champion in the Super Fly Weight division, having won national championship 13 times.
His father, Refugio Navarro, himself overcame the streets. He kicked addiction and now is sober. He is the trainer for Steven, who turned pro in April and has not lost a bout in six matchups. His uncle, Jose Navarro, was a 2000 U.S. Olympian.
Top Rank says he’s “dynamite.”
“We’re with God.” Steven captions on his Instagram post. “ My Father is my daily reminder of God’s work. From beating the streets, to traveling the world and showcasing what the glory of God can and will continue to do.”
