Right smack in the middle of The West in the middle of the bastion of Free Speech, a Muslim preacher in the Netherlands called for the killing of Moroccan nutritionist Mohamed El Faid for insulting Mohammad.
Some are calling it a Fatwa, a religious ruling that anyone anywhere can carry out.
“El Faid is not to be offered repentance [to escape the punishment]. The prescribed punishment must be carried out against him, and no one, whoever he may be, is permitted to pardon him,” said Sheikh Rachid Nafi (per translation).
Bring in radical Muslims, give them Free Speech, and this is what you get.
Nafi was at least careful enough to call on competent authorities to carry out the execution (not free-lancers), but fanatical Muslims will understand the gloss and carry it out on their own.
El Faid, though well he knows the danger, responded with sarcasm and defiance: “So, will you attend my funeral?”
El Faid had challenged the traditional history among Muslims holding that Mohammad was illiterate. “How would God choose an illiterate man in a barren land to convey the message?” he asked.
Yes, that is what offended Muslims.
Christian convert Rachid Hammami on X characterized it as a fatwa, a religious order almost on part with the Qur’an demanding obedience of Muslims everywhere.
“According to Nafi, even if El Faid repents, he should still be killed, and no one, regardless of who they are, has the right to stop his execution,” Hammami said on X. “This is not merely a theological disagreement. It is a religious ruling calling for a man’s death over words, issued by a preacher living in the Netherlands.”
