Whatever you do, don’t blame the Somali immigrants. Never mind that 80+ of the 92 charged defendants at the center of an estimated $18B welfare fraud scheme in Minnesota are Somali Americans.
If a lot of that money made its way to Somalia to fund terrorist group Al-Shabaab, that’s the FBI’s fault, says Rep. Ilhan Omar, herself Somali American.
“If there was a linkage in the money that they have stolen going to terrorism, then that is a failure of the FBI and our court system in not figuring that out,” Omar told Face the Nation earlier in December.
The widening scope of federal investigations into feeding programs that did not feed, schools that did not teach, autism care facilities that did not care has become staggering.
How could so much have been siphoned off for so long (back to 2018) without the givers of that money finding out?
Sen. John Kennedy said welfare administrators warned about the fraud, but state Democrat leaders stymied their investigation, apparently to shield a valuable voting block.
“There have been a lot of allegations about racism in these reports. They are saying: ‘Oh, you are just picking on the Somali community,'” Kennedy said. “I am not, and I don’t think the American people are. I think what they are picking on are crooks.

“It is a fact that these $1 billion schemes were cooked up by leaders in the Somali community in Minneapolis and in Minnesota. It is a fact that most of the businesses that participated in this fraud… were run by people of Somali ancestry,” Kennedy added. “I am not saying that is a good thing. I am not saying that is a bad thing. That is just a fact.

“(Minnesota Gov.) Tim Walz systematically retaliated against whistleblowers using monitoring, threats, repression, and did his best to discredit fraud reports,” the Louisiana Republican Senator said.

The worst case so far has been the Feeding Our Future charity, which defrauded $250M saying it served millions of meals. Instead, the organizers running the scam pocketed the money. They enriched themselves with high-end real estate, Mercedes Benzes and BMWs, luxury watches and jewelry. A significant part of the money was wired abroad. Investigators are trying to determine if it was used to fund Al-Shabaab.
Pilgrim Dispatch reported on the diversion of funds before most outlets. Since then, investigations have exploded.

Meanwhile, the Nakomis Day Care Center announced that someone broke in and stole nothing of value but all of its important documents. Manager Nasrulah Mohamed, giving a press conference in front of a “racism has not part in day care” sign, announced the unusual robbery.
The timing seems strange since the feds are investigating fraud in such centers.
