Minnesota, with its huge immigrant Muslim base, is the largest funder of terror group Al-Shabaab in Somalia, a former Minnesota legislator says.
“The largest single funder of Al-Shabaab, the terrorist organization in Somalia, are the Minnesota taxpayers,” says David Gaither.
Investigators have uncovered $250M worth of fraud in day-care and feeding programs, started during Covid, in the Somali immigrant crowd.
“The money taken in that fraud doesn’t stay here,” Gaither alleges. “Millions of dollars a month are sent out of the Minneapolis airport legally. It goes East and ends up in people’s hands that will do mischief and bad things to the United States.”
As long as you declare that you are transporting more than $10,000 on a plane, you are legal (in terms of transporting it), he explains.
The Democratic-run state, where former Democratic running mate Tim Walz is governor, has been reluctant to crack down on the fraud and terrorist funding because they see the world in terms of victims and oppressors, Gaither says. Muslims, as people of color, are by definition victims, in the Democratic mindset.
“This is a metal-on-metal conversation for the Democrats,” Gaither says. “You’ve got people that are getting harmed and hurt, and businesses leaving, but they’re being disadvantaged by a group that’s been disadvantaged. So who’s got the greater victim status?”
Where state officials seem loathe to crack down, federal investigators have stepped in.
As of September, federal investigators made their 75th indictment of a defendant related to the Dar Al-Farooq Islamic Center, which served as a center for receiving and disbursing Feeding Our Future funds (a Covid program still running).
The fraud — which takes the form of inflated meal counts, shell entities and kickbacks — is estimated to reach $250 million. At last count, 56 defendants have pled guilty, including Mahad Ibrahim, Hamdi Hussein Omar, Hibo Salah Daar, Mahad Ibrahim and Abdullahe Nur Jesow. As yet, no mosque officials have been charged; the defendants are “related” to the mosque.
Mukhtar Shariff, a major participant in the scheme, was sentenced in January 2025 to 17.5 years in prison plus 3 years of supervised release over charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and Fmoney laundering. His case was unsettling because of alleged jury tampering; a $120,000 cash gift was dropped at a juror’s residence.
This is happening in America. Most of the Somali immigrants gain entrance to the United States via a lottery system for asylum-seekers in a 500,000-person refugee camp in Ethiopia, Gaithers says. The problem is the Somalis only know government corruption in their homeland, and apparently they think the U.S. is no different, he adds.
Gaither says much of the money siphoned off wound up in Somalia in the hands of Al-Shabaab, a militant Salafi-jihadist group that performs suicide bombings, mass shootings, assassinations and attacks on civilian and military targets in their movement to wrest control of the nation.
Since 2007, Al-Shabaab has recruited Somali Minnesotans to travel abroad and support the terror group, which is a U.S. designated terror organization. More than 20 Minnesotans have been charged. One of the first documented U.S. citizens, from the Minneapolis area, to carry out a suicide bombing on behalf of Al-Shabaab was Shirwa Ahmed.
One of the Al-Shabaab propagandists from Minnesota area is Mujahid Miski (Muhammed Abdullahi Hassan) who reportedly left Minnesota for Somalia (as a teenager) and became active in recruitment and propaganda operations with messaging in English.
Studies into the phenomenon regularly discount Islamic teachings about jihad and conquest in the Qur’an and the hadith to avoid at all costs the much-feared “Islamophobia” label. Instead, the liberal-funded and liberal-run studies blame social inequality, lack of opportunities, perceived marginalization and identity crises.
A section of Minneapolis full of Somali immigrants is known as Little Mogadishu. In this case, it appears that Little Mogadishu is funding Big Mogadishu.
