An essay by Abdul Masih —
In college, I was subjected to a pretty steady stream of criticism of America. There was a positive side to this, but the negative was I became ashamed of America. The impression was that America has only done evil around the world through exploitative capitalism, the CIA, interference in other nations, deliberately infecting prisoners in Guatemala with venereal disease to study its effects. The list goes on.
Then I went to the world and lived there. I saw that America is not the only nation with racism. I concluded that every nation has racism.
I saw hardcore corruption, where you fear the police as much as the criminals. I saw bureaucrats who feel entitled and don’t do their job. I saw a medical system busted where patients were turned away from ER and died. I saw people of any nationality consumed with greed and void of compassion, exploitative and evil.

When I returned to America, it was under adverse circumstances. I fled for my life from a set of criminals. The Good Ole USA was there for me in my moment of need. After years of (only) viewing America critically, I saw my native land with new eyes. I rediscovered patriotism.
So what was the good of the criticism professors aimed at America? It is proof of America’s greatness. It is the freedom of speech and self-examination that leads to reform. I don’t think American is perfect or free from problems. But we as Americans are free to address and attempt to fix problems.
Not so in China. If you criticize the government, you will be arrested — even for posting a joke on social media about nonfunctioning bureaucrats. Not so North Korea, where you’ll get hard labor and starvation diet in prison. Not so the countries of Islam, where a mob is liable to rise up and lynch you. The UK has arrested over 400 people for social media posts questioning their government’s lack of attention to grooming gangs.
Canadians face long wait lines for specialized attention with country’s socialized medicine. Mexico is overrun by cartel violence. France is overrun by mobs and Muslim madmen. Ukraine has rampant corruption. Russia has a dictatorship. In South Africa, they are killing white farmers and taking their land. In Nigeria, the government pretty much stands idly by while terrorists annihilate Christians. In Nicaragua, only pro-Sandinista protesters have free speech; the others are “disappeared.” Etc, etc, etc.

The world made me proud of America.
Where is there a better country than America? The incessant criticism, the blowing out of proportions of problems, the hyperbole and grievance mongers gives the idea that America is the worst offender worldwide. If that’s what you think, pick a country and move there. All you feeble brains who think socialism is the answer, move to ANY socialist/communist country and live there. Give it five years (not just a curated vacation in tourist hotels luxuried-up to bring in need money for the nation), and I’d love to ask you again.
Hang around long enough to have a brush with crime abroad. Stick around long enough to be hassled by a cop or stymied mind-numbingly by a bureaucrat. Get the know the people long enough: Are they free from racism? Is the country free from sexism? Does their society work efficiently? Can you get things done without bribing some government official?
The irony for the America-haters is that millions of people from around the world would risk life and limb to immigrate to America — legally or illegally. The millions of immigrants are speaking with their actions that America is great. It is greater than the nation they are coming from; they are fed up with the lack of opportunities, the poverty, the violence of their native lands and they are investing life savings and exposing themselves to exploitative wolves all along the path with the distant hope of a quiet , peaceful and prosperous life that only America affords.
You may not like illegal immigration, but don’t miss it’s message: America is the greatest nation on the Earth. Don’t let the crybabies, the liberal media, celebrities, college professors, the elites, Antifa and the rest of the Woke World disorient you with impressive vocab: “systemic racism,” for example.
Once upon a time, I was ashamed of America. Now I am ashamed of having once been ashamed.
And I am sorry. I am sorry that I didn’t have the answers and didn’t look for the answers when my professors ranted against the U.S.A.
This Fourth of July, I’ll be celebrating with great happiness.
