As an atheist, Michael Ray Lewis made horror films.
He poked holes in the faith of Christians: Evolution has disproven Christianity. If there’s an all-loving God then there wouldn’t be the existence of evil in the world. I can’t believe in a God that would send me to an eternal punishment just because I have trouble believing in him.
“I put forth all these objections that Christians just weren’t able to answer,” Michael says. “I gravitated towards atheism because it seemed like the most logical explanation.”
Bill Mahr documentaries were the icing on the cake. They purported that Jesus was a myth, a copy of other religions.
When his wife started to feel “called” back to Christianity, he didn’t want to deal with it — even though he loved her. He didn’t get past a few chapters in the book of Genesis before closing the Bible and giving up. He attended church with her as a good sport; it wasn’t so bad.
He thought he could get off the hook if he proved to her Christianity was false. So he started digging.
“In the process of trying to prove to her that it really isn’t true, I started to discover the evidence,” he says.
A video of an astrophysicist popped up into his YouTube feed. “He was showing that science is not incompatible with Christianity,” Michael says. “In fact, science shows there’s evidence for there being an intelligent creator.”
For three years, he went down the rabbit hole, reading Stephen Myer, Hugh Ross and others. “The more I was looking into it, it seemed that every line of evidence was pointing in one direction,” he remembers.
Still unwilling to give up years of holding to the atheistic worldview, he probed his wife about scriptures. She suggested a friend who was a theologian.
Armed with five pages of tough questions from the years of being an atheist, Michael went to see the theologian. The guy answered them all out of scripture.
On his way home with his wife in the car, the Holy Spirit confirmed to Michael what he was feeling. “I actually think this is true,” he thought.
He became a Christian.
He felt the need to get out of making horror flicks.
His wife suggested he film a documentary about all the evidence that corroborates Christianity. The result is Universe Designed now on Amazon, Google Play, Apple T.V., YouTube and others.
