Stripping Jesus of his divinity and remaking him into a Marxist hero, Columbia’s President Gustavo Petro commented that the Man of the Gospels actually made love to Mary Magdalene and never called himself Christ.
“I believe Jesus made love, yes … perhaps with Mary Magdalene, because a man like that without love could not have existed,” the non-practicing Catholic said. Jesus was a “man of light, of truth and a revolutionary” but not “Christ” because that means he attributed to himself “power and kingship.”
Liberation Theology downplays the supernatural in the Gospels and recasts Biblical events in terms of socialism and class struggle. This happened in Cuba, where all but one theological seminary was taken over by Liberation Theology.
Petro rose to prominence as a member of the Marxist-influenced guerrilla group M-19 in his youth before it demobilized, and that early experience shapes perceptions of his politics. He is the first left-wing president in Columbia, having won election in 2022.
His Christ-warping comments were made at the opening of a hospital in in Bogotá.
