Words supporting motherhood and pro life are not often spoken about in Hollywood these days, especially on TV.
“I wouldn’t have been able to do this without employing a woman’s right to choose when to have my children,” Michelle Williams praised abortion during the 2020 Golden Globe Awards.
She wouldn’t be tied down by a baby and could be free to pursue her acting career, she insinuated. The result was her little gold trophy.

So it was pleasantly surprising at the Oscars on Sunday night that actress Jessie Buckley did the exact opposite when she was given best actress award.
“So I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart,” Buckley said. “We all come from a lineage of women who continue to create against all odds.”

Addressing her husband, Freddie, she added: “You’re the most incredible dad. I want to have 20,000 more babies with you.” The couple welcomed their first daughter born in 2025. She’s now eight months old.
Rather than framing abortion as a stepping stone for success, she presents it as something deeply serious, potentially tragic, and argues that society should move toward protecting life rather than normalizing or praising its termination.
One view presents abortion as liberation; a necessary right that enables women to shape their futures. The other presents abortion as loss; the ending of a human life that should be protected. Williams says she achieved success thanks to abortion; Buckley embraced success in her career while having children.
