Shaun King becomes Muslim. Is this where Leftists are headed?

For more than 10 years, Shaun King was an emblematic social justice warrior. He fought police brutality and racism, wielding his fierce pen at the New York Daily News, The Young Turks and The North Star.

Then in March 2024, the icon for the Left — whose combined followers on X, IG and FB is 8 million — became Muslim.

“It has touched me in the most profound ways to see people right now in the most dangerous, traumatic place on the planet still be able to sometimes look at nothing but rubble and the remains of their family, and still see meaning and purpose in life,” Shawn wrote about Gazans. “Their faith and their devotion to Islam has not only opened my heart but has opened the hearts of millions of people around the world.”

Lay aside for a moment the accusations of grift and misappropriating of fund-raised money that swirl around King (after taking the shahada at mosque in Texas to inaugurate Ramadan, he immediately launched a paid-for speaking tour). Forget about the fact that for 10 years he was a Christian pastor in Georgia.

Consider only for a moment a more sinister question: Is this the endgame for millions of social justice warriors, who in their self-righteous anti-racism have blindly embraced the Muslim and accuse of Islamophobia anyone who wishes to debate comparative religion style?

Are myriads of purple-hair co-eds with nose rings who today put a hijab on their head and bow in prayer on college campuses in solidarity with Palestine destined to take the same plunge as King?

Conservative firebrands are snide: LGBTQ supporting Islam is like chickens for KFC. Sharia law would mete out capital punishment for the adoring gays, lesbians and trans who scream antisemitic rants in the streets against the Jews.

No one from the extreme Left heeds warnings from those who know Islam. No one cares to study the history of conquest of Islam, the rapes, the beheadings. No one wonders why immigrants leave Islamdom in droves and come to societies with a Christian heritage of prosperity and freedom. No one realizes that the great number of religious killing worldwide is protagonized by Islamic extremists.

The Left pays attention only to its narratives and views the world through the lens of communism, the struggle of the people against the capitalists (colonialists, imperialists, white, male, Jews). Their support of Palestine is entrenched to the point that they cannot logic their way out.

Consider the U.K., where King Charles in order to celebrate Easter specifically praised Islam. The U.K. police and judiciary are currently adopting anti-blasphemy policies in which they are arresting people for criticizing Islam, Mohammad or the Koran. For two decades in the U.K., you could burn a Bible in the name of free speech. That was OK. But if you do the same to the Koran, you get arrested.

The solidarity with Muslims is more racism than political or historical analysis. The chief reason Leftist pick the side of the Palestinians is because they are people of color. Never mind that Hamas invaded Israel killing, raping and taking hostages. Never mind that they still hold 50 hostages. Leftists are so entranced with Palestine that they chant “By any means necessary.”

In other words, raping the “oppressor” is a legitimate “resistance.”

Even though their values are antithetical (Islam is awash with rules while Leftists flout rules), it’s not so implausible that progressives might turn to Islam after their chaos leads to disillusion and they turn to something traditional to bring values and foundation to their life adrift.

After fighting racial justice in the United States (King is credited with identifying three suspects in the racial beating of DeAndre Harris in Aug. 2017), he turned his attention to defending Hamas and the Houthis in 2023. His embrace of the terrorists culminated in his embrace of their religion.

“I’ve studied Islam for years. I first attend a mosque all the way back in 1997. I’ve spoken at Muslim conferences and events for the past 10 years,” he wrote on LinkedIn. “But here’s the thing… I’ve seen and learned more about Islam from BEING a Muslim for 2 weeks than I did in all of those other years combined. It’s so much more than the corrupt cultures of the world will ever explain. I have more peace and more inner strength than ever before. It’s beautiful actually.”

Will the myriad progressives and antifas follow suit?
