To give up New Age manifesting brought Kali Johnston tremendous relief.
“It started to consume me. I thought I was attracting everything, good or bad,” Kali says. “I had to always be hyper aware of my thoughts. If something bad did happen, I thought it was my fault. It was super stressful.”
Christianity, by contrast, doesn’t work like that; you pray for things and trust the results to Jesus. He has control of your life.
But Kali didn’t know that when, after high school, she was given The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. The New Age book promotes the idea that you can “attract” wealth, health and happiness just by projecting positive thinking and confession upon the universe. This is “manifesting.”
But negatively, if something bad happens, it had its origins in your thoughts, emotions or confessions, the book teaches.
Kali, like millions of American (especially young ladies) liked the idea of thinking money into her wallet. But when bad things happened, she reprimanded herself for some bad thought.
“It really left me overwhelmed how my life laid out in my hands,” she says.
Plus, she was disturbed by the higher level New Age teaching that you become your own God by attaining “Christ consciousness,” which means you become as divine as Christ by your positive power of thinking.
“These practices aren’t really New Age. It really is ‘old age.’ It goes back to the garden, the very essence of New Age would be what Christians call the serpent’s lie. The very first lie ever was that you can be like god. that you are divine. Human beings have always tried to elevate themselves to a god-like status.”
She began to feel conviction of the Holy Spirit and research on YouTube videos. She listened and learned from former practitioners and teachers of New Age, like Doreen Virtue.
“I threw out my crystals,” Kali says. “I threw out my Law of Attraction books and any spiritual books. I’m so thankful for him for opening my eyes.”
