Iran was liberalizing too fast under the Shah: women could dress as they wanted, they had equality, they held government positions. It generated not a backlash but a jihad-lash, says Elica Le Bon, an Iranian American.
The West (and President Jimmy Carter) conspired with Ali Khamenei, thinking he’d be easier to sway on oil policy, to take over Iran, Le Bon says. Then the hardline Muslims smashed their communist partners and assumed total control of Iran and got rid of Western imperialism.
“My mom told me they would like throw acid in women’s faces if they weren’t wearing the hijab,” says Le Bon, born in London. “They brought a huge crushing of dissidents. A lot of people were executed — a lot of my family members. My mom was put in Evan prison briefly, my aunt was in Evan prison.
“Evan prison is the notorious prison where basically it’s like the prison of no return,” she adds. “They would have a row of hanged bodies lining the walkway at the entrance of the prison so people would understand what they were going into.”
They executed her uncle and released her aunt because she was pregnant. But Le Bon’s cousin has epilepsy now because of the poisons they gave the mother, Le Bon says.
Mom escaped Iran because she got really sick and was granted a medical visa to the UK, where she met Le Bon’s dad, who had been studying at Oxford with a scholarship from the Shah. Of course, the scholarship was canceled when the ayatollah took over.
Today, Le Bon is a lawyer in Los Angeles and she tries to reason with Left, who want to make Iran into the good guys and the U.S. into the bad guys.
“People in the west seek to rationalize fundamentalism, If America did this, then obviously they would do that,” Le Bon says. “They think that there’s a cause and effect to fundamentalism. They don’t understand that fundamentalism is just insanity. There’s no rationalizing it.
“It’s a failure to understand true evil,” Le Bon says. “People don’t think that it’s possible to just be truly evil.”
Le Bon argues that both President Barak Obama and President Joe Biden got “pulled one over on them” when they thought they could bring the nuclear-seeking rogue nation into the fold by appeasing them with money.
Obama pledged $150B in frozen assets to Iran, and Biden transferred $6B in oil revenues frozen in South Korean Banks.
“‘It’s been 45 years of a failed strategy of appeasement,” Le Bon says. “They tried the same thing with the Nazi regime. They appeased for so long that they ended up having to kill 50 million people. You’re just delaying the inevitable.”
There are no easy answers, and people are tired of the U.S. interfering in international politics. But Le Bon says the U.S. needs to correct it’s past mistakes of easing the Ayatollah into power.

“People have a war hangover — like never again with war,” she says “But your failure to take action in a lot of these places has literally resulted in the worst case scenario. America had a hand a huge hand in putting Taliban in Afghanistan (when it used radical Muslims to fight the Soviet Union) and the Islamic Republic in Iran.
“You can’t just do that and then walk away and be like Oh war hangover,” she adds.
