Cardinal Robert Sarah is warning the West is in danger of extinction.
“If Europe disappears, and with it the invaluable values of the old continent, Islam will invade the world,” Sarah said. “And we will totally change culture, anthropology and moral vision.”
Upon turning their backs on God, Europeans chose moral relativism and created a spiritual vacuum that is being seized by Islamists to finally conquer the European continent, says the archbishop emeritus of Conakry, Guinea.
“The West no longer knows who it is,” Sarah says. “By losing its faith, Europe has also lost its reason to be. A Godless society masks the emptiness of its materialism.”
A society that loses God, truth and moral limits will be defenseless—whether against nihilism from within or fanaticism from without, he says.
“I would like to emphasize the rejection of fatherhood,” he says. “Our contemporaries are convinced that, in order to be free, one must not depend on anybody. There is a tragic error in this. Western people are convinced that receiving is contrary to the dignity of human persons.”
Born in the village of Ourous in then French Guinea in 1945 to a family of farmers who converted to Christianity from animism, Sarah grew up among Muslims. He was ordained priest in 1969, and 10 years later he was made Metropolitan Archbishop of Conakry.
At risk of life, he resisted the Marxist dictator Ahmed Sékou Touré of Guinea and fought the utopian schemes that only brought misery and death. Touré put Sarah on a hit list but died in 1984 before it could be fulfilled.
Sarah has called gender ideology and the Islamic State the “two radicalizations” that threaten the family, the former through divorce, same-sex marriage and abortion, and the latter with child marriage, polygamy and the subjugation of women.
“I want to suggest to Western people that the real cause of this refusal to claim their inheritance and this refusal of fatherhood is the rejection of God. From Him we receive our nature as man and woman,” Sarah says. “Gender ideology is a Luciferian refusal to receive a sexual nature from God. Thus some rebel against God and pointlessly mutilate themselves in order to change their sex.”
An octogenarian, Sarah lives in Rome and writes and speaks about these issues.
