According to long-time critic of Islam, David Wood, Ali Khamenei‘s assassination and the subsequent demolition of the Shi’ite regime is the last vestige of hope for faith in Islam.
“It’s almost impossible to overstate how traumatic the assassination of Khamenei is to Muslims,” said the Apologetics Roadshow podcaster. “Everyone is completely missing the big picture… Muslims are throwing tantrums because they’re looking around at the world and thinking, If Islam is true, this isn’t the way things should be. It’s suffocating their confidence.”
The significance of the ayatollah’s death is that he represented the only remaining attempt to prove that Allah is true because he gives victory to his followers, which the Qur’an states unequivocally are “superior” to “disbelievers” like Jews and Christians. The prior failure was the fall of ISIS.

After colonial Western Europe defeated and dismantled the Ottoman Empire in 1924, the Umma — the global community of Muslims — was no longer the winner of wars. In the Qur’an, Mohammed states that one of the proofs of Islam is that Muslim win wars (Surah 3:12-13), Wood says.
The resulting doubt caused many Muslim nations to drop the 7th Century lifestyle of Arabia and to Westernize.
But then the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928 proposed an explanation: Muslim nations stopped winning wars because they weren’t obeying Allah enough and Allah was punishing them. If you just carried out fully sharia law, Islam would return to its winning conquests.

On the Sunni side, ISIS took up the call to prove obedience/victory hypothesis. When ISIS was defeated in 2019, it fell to the Shia branch of Islam (represented by Iran) to come through, Wood says. The staggering defeat of Shia in Iran is only compounded by the fact that it’s being done by Jews (Israel) and Christians (as understood by Muslims to be America).
The death blow comes on an “avalanche of apostasy,” as Dr Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips said about the precipitous decline. A Western study found that 25% of Muslims kids in the West leave Islam. It’s a phenomenon not limited to the West.
“Two-thirds of Iranians don’t believe in Islam. Out of the 75,000 mosques, 50,000 closed in 2023,” says Mohamad Faridi who posts ex-Muslim testimonies on his YouTube channel. “In 2026, the protesters were burning down the mosques… and the Islamic symbols. They are done. The numbers are in millions. I call this movement The Great Exodus.
“It’s truly a tsunami of ex-Muslims who are leaving Islam and coming to the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,” adds the immigrant from Iran.
Islam is collapsing, as the foundations are being scrutinized: the supposed preservation of the Qur’an, the dubious provenance of the hadiths, even the historicity of the esteemed prophet. No document exists attesting to Muhammed until 200 years after his death.

“I can tell you that some people who are still Muslim are now doubting Islam because of these new conversations we are now having about the historicity of Muhammed,” says Armin Navibi of Atheist Republic on YouTube.
