The reason why Liberals consistently promote policies that undercut the family has its roots in the emergence of Marxism that glorified state over family.
So says economist Thomas Sowell, whose intellect is as huge as his humility.
“In the first draft of The Communist Manifesto, Friedrich Engels specifically wanted to dismember the family,” Sowell says. “But (Karl) Marx decided that wasn’t gonna fly, so when he rewrote it he left that out.
“But that’s been there over the past two centuries, they try to undermine the decision-making autonomy of the family,” he adds.
The latest public policy to undermine family is the decision of some states to nullify parents’ authority when an impressionable child rashly decides to transition gender. Schools in some districts are prohibited from telling parents, can help kids get hormones to transition.

But this is the just the most recent of the troubling trend. How about an underage girl can get an abortion without her parents’ consent but can’t get her ears pierced unless a parent approves? How about rewarding and thus fostering single mothers by funding them, the more children out of wedlock they have, the more money they get?
The list goes on.
“The Left has promoted a moral relativism that has undermined the family as a stabilizing force, especially in low-income communities,” Sowell says. “Policies that discourage marriage and parental responsibility are not acts of compassion but seeds of social decay.”
The latest onslaught to trivialize marriage is a host of articles that twist data to suggest that cohabitation is now more common than actual marriage, Sowell says. A recent article in the New York Times headlined, “Most American women today do not have husbands.”
But the times stretched the data. They included widows and girls as young as 16 to prove that most women are unmarried. While the data didn’t reflect reality, the article contained quotes about how marriage was passé, an anachronism, a ball and chain for women.
“Liberals are bent on destroying marriage,” Sowell says.

Nevertheless, marriage is still good for everyone. “Married couples are, in fact, better off than unmarried couples, by almost any standard you can think of,” he says. “People who are married have higher incomes. The rate of domestic violence in marriage is a fraction of what it is among people who are simply living together. The abuse of children in married-couple families is a fraction of what the abuse of children is among people who are simply living together.
“Marriage makes a difference among blacks,” he adds. “Black married couples have had a poverty rate in single digits every year since 1994.”
The intelligentsia promotes sex but not love. Love is the glue that hold the family and, by extension, society together.
“Love is one of those bonds which enable people to function and societies to flourish-without being directed from above” by politicians, he says. “Love is one of the many ways we influence each other and work out our interrelated lives without the help of the anointed (Sowell’s sarcastic term for the Lefties, who see themselves as more enlightened than the rest of society).”
But when politicians usurp parents, they destroy the children and feel no consequences.
What sort of destruction have they brought about? Venereal disease and teenage pregnancy was going down every year until they introduced sex education, at which time it shot up, Sowell says.
“People underestimate the importance of love. The human race could not survive without love. When a newborn baby enters the world, a lot of things are demanded and the baby is in no position to compensate anybody,” says Sowell. “If the parents are so bad, society has a backup system whereby the baby will still be kept alive.”
So even though Engels didn’t get his attack on marriage into The Communist Manifesto, his doctrines have thrived and grown in American society.
